Wasatch Journal: Celebrating Utah’s Arts, Culture, and Outdoors

Wasatch Journal’s content matches the adventurous yet sophisticated nature of those who live, visit, and thrive in Utah. Increasingly desirable for residents, second-home owners, and travelers, Utah is known for its spectacular scenery, boundless recreational opportunities, and vibrant arts scene.

Our thoughtful and entertaining content focuses on fine arts, culture, architecture, and design, as well as Utah’s wondrous outdoor pursuits—from hiking to skiing, from cycling to encounters with wildlife. We publish the region’s best fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and photography in a glossy, four-color, coffee-table format. We publish quarterly issues and occasional special issues: April (early summer), July (summer), October (early winter), and January (winter), and a holiday issue that honors Utah's giving spirit.

Our affluent, well-educated readers value a high-quality magazine addressing topics that are important to them. Many own more than one home or are planning to buy or build a home. They enjoy fine dining, collecting art, and exploring new terrain, both physical and spiritual.

As well as in-depth features, fiction, and photo essays, each issue includes the following
departments and columns:

Arts: Showcasing the best of Utah’s visual and performance arts
Cuisine: Taking a fresh look at the region’s fine, new, and undiscovered dining options
Film: Capturing the movies and movie makers, during Sundance and beyond
Green Utah: Keeping up-to-date on regional environmental advances
History: Offering lively, often humorous, vignettes from the region’s past
In the Elements: Taking on the many possibilities that Utah’s landscape offers throughout the year
Moveable Type: Showcasing Utah authors and the world of books
Out of Bounds: Profiling CEOs, scientists, hermits—anyone who defies categorization
Rhythm: Profiling musicians and music lovers
Speed: Finding out who goes fastest, when, why, and how; the Bonneville Salt Flats are just the beginning
Style and Structure: Exploring the area’s most exciting architecture and design
Wasatch Journal Index: Listing the facts of Utah that confound expectations
Well-Being: Giving new insights into mental and physical fitness
Worst-Case Scenario: Preparing for the worst with Utah native and bestselling humorist David Borgenicht

OUR READERS

Wasatch Journal readers are mountain enthusiasts, travelers, and adventurers. They are also highly educated and have significant disposable income. Many of our readers are out-of-state visitors—largely from the coasts and other metropolitan areas—who travel here regularly. Many own second homes in the Wasatch region and elsewhere in the Utah or the West. A picture of our readers:

Their median income is $280,000.*
Their median age is 40.
According to research by American Demographics magazine, the Salt Lake City area has one of the highest concentrations of wealth in the United States. These families are likely to spend their money on car upgrades, food and wine, upscale travel, electronics, and entertainment. They are also more likely to read high-end glossy publications such as Architectural Digest or Gourmet than they are to read business magazines.

They want to live in places where the arts and high-end amenities are accessible; they are part of a surging number of enthusiasts interested in art by Western artists or with Western themes.

Utah residents, year-round or part-time, are looking for homes, builders, and ways to update and decorate their houses. Our demographic is three times as likely as the general population to spend on significant home improvements every year.

Many come to Utah for adventure travel. The most popular activities include skiing, snowboarding, hiking, backpacking, fishing, camping, walking, golf, hunting, cycling, and boating.

Since the Wasatch Journal is available in hotel rooms and retail outlets in Park City, many of our readers are visitors to that area, either from outside or within Utah. The average age of Park City’s overnight visitors is 48; 80 percent are married; 75 percent have a college or graduate degree; and 46 percent have a household income of $100,000 or more.

* Based on reader surveys from our other similar publications, which include Big Sky Journal and Tahoe Quarterly.
